Ahrefs alternatives for startups and small teams in 2026

The closest like-for-like Ahrefs alternative is Semrush. The cheapest full replacement for a small team is SE Ranking, at $129 a month with 2,000 tracked keywords and 100 AI prompts tracked daily. If you only used Ahrefs to watch your own site, Google Search Console plus the free Ahrefs plan replaces it for $0.

All prices and limits below come from each vendor's own pricing page, as of October 2026. We compare what vendors publish. We have not run our own test of whose data is more accurate.

Why small teams look for an alternative

  • Price. Ahrefs Lite costs $129 a month for one user. Standard, the first plan with unlimited credits, costs $249 (Ahrefs).
  • Credits. Lite includes 1,000 credits per user. Opening a report costs 1 credit, and each new filter, date change or "Inspect" window costs another (Ahrefs help). A busy research week can use up a month's credits.
  • AI visibility costs extra. Lite tracks 5 AI prompts. Brand Radar AI, Ahrefs' full AI visibility tool, is an add-on from $199 a month (Ahrefs).
  • Starter is narrow. The $29 plan gives 200 credits a month, 1 month of history and 250 rows per report, with no exports (Ahrefs help).

Semrush: the closest match

Best for: teams that want the same kind of all-in-one suite, with AI visibility built into the plans.

Semrush's SEO plan costs $139 a month, or $117.33 billed yearly. It covers 5 websites, 500 keywords tracked daily, a site audit, and AI visibility reports for any domain. The Starter plan, $199 a month, adds 50 AI prompts tracked daily, 300 AI visibility reports a day and MCP access for AI assistants. Pro+ costs $299 for 15 websites and 1,500 tracked keywords (Semrush).

The data is on the same scale as Ahrefs'. Semrush reports over 43 trillion backlinks and 28.8 billion keywords across 142 country databases (Semrush). Ahrefs reports 35 trillion external backlinks in its history and 29 billion keywords (Ahrefs). The two count links differently, so do not read those numbers as a ranking.

What you give up: Semrush calls the SEO plan's keyword and competitor tools "basic". Historical SEO data starts on Pro+. Each extra user starts at $45 a month. The free plan stops at 10 reports a day, which is enough to try the interface but not to do research.

SE Ranking: the most for the money

Best for: a founder or one marketer who wants rank tracking, research and AI prompt tracking on one bill.

The cheaper plan costs $129 a month, or $103.20 billed yearly. It includes 10 projects, 2,000 keywords tracked daily, 100 AI prompts tracked daily across 5 AI models, a 250,000-page monthly site audit, and keyword, competitor and backlink research with no listed cap. Growth costs $279 a month for 30 projects, 3 seats and 5,000 tracked keywords. The trial lasts 14 days and needs no credit card (SE Ranking).

On paper, that is more tracked keywords and AI prompts than Ahrefs Lite or Semrush's SEO plan, at the same or lower price.

What you give up: one seat on the cheaper plan, with extra seats from $16. History is limited to 6 months until Growth. SE Ranking does not publish index sizes on its pricing page, so during the trial look up three competitors you know well and compare the backlinks and keywords it finds against what you already know.

Moz Pro: cheapest entry, tight research limits

Best for: teams that mostly need rank tracking and AI prompt tracking, not daily keyword research.

Standard costs $99 a month, or $79 billed yearly. It includes 3 tracked sites, 300 tracked keywords and 150 tracked AI prompts, checked weekly across GPT, Gemini, Google AI Mode and Perplexity. Medium costs $179 for 2 users, 10 sites, 1,500 tracked keywords and 300 prompts. Moz also offers a $49 plan for one website (Moz). Moz says its Link Explorer covers over 40 trillion links and its keyword index holds over 1.25 billion keywords (Moz).

What you give up: Standard allows 150 keyword queries a month and 5,000 backlink queries. Medium raises keyword queries to 5,000. If you research keywords every week, Standard will not last the month.

Free tools: if you only watched your own site

Many small teams pay for Ahrefs and only open reports about their own site. If that is you, cancel and use:

  • Google Search Console for the searches you appear in, clicks and indexing problems. Google calls it "a free service" (Google).
  • Ahrefs Free for your own backlinks and keywords, up to 1,000 visible at once, plus 5,000 Site Audit crawl credits a month per project (Ahrefs).
  • Bing Webmaster Tools for Bing data and its AI Performance report, which counts how often Copilot and Bing's AI summaries cite your pages (Bing).
  • Screaming Frog's free version for a technical crawl of up to 500 URLs.

What you give up: any view of competitors. You cannot see which keywords a rival ranks for or who links to them.

When to stay on Ahrefs

Switching costs time. Stay if any of these are true:

  • You use Standard or higher. Unlimited credits remove the main complaint, and Standard keeps 2 years of history (Ahrefs).
  • Your work is mostly backlinks. Ahrefs says its backlink index is updated "every 15–30 minutes" (Ahrefs). If link prospecting and competitor link gaps are your daily job, keep the tool you know.
  • You have years of tracking data in it. Rank history does not move with you to a new tool.
  • You already pay for Brand Radar AI. Ahrefs reports about 486 million AI prompts a month across AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini and Perplexity (Ahrefs). The alternatives above track prompts you choose, not a database of that size.

How to switch without losing work

  1. Export your tracked keyword list and your saved keyword lists.
  2. Export your backlinks and referring domains, so you have a baseline.
  3. Start the new tool's trial. Add the same project, the same keywords and the same three competitors.
  4. Compare a week of rank data side by side before you cancel.
  5. Cancel Ahrefs at the end of the billing period.

Whatever tool you pick, it only helps if search engines and AI crawlers can read your pages. Our free check tests whether ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity can fetch your site, and our guide to AI crawlers and JavaScript explains what to fix if they cannot.
